Perhaps drunkenness is the most important socio economic problem in the costal belts of Kerala. The focus of this paper is a genuine retrospective study under taken as a clinical audit, in people who are addicted to alcohol.
Addiction is a state of periodic or chronic intoxication harmful to the individual and to the society, produced by repeated consumption of alcohol or drug. The inability to discontinue consumption may be due either to a desire and craving for satisfaction, or an anxiety to avoid the discomfort of withdrawal symptoms or both. Homoeopathy the 21st century medicine based on the law of similar can effectively manage the altered desires and cravings and annihilates the effects of withdrawal symptoms in any person addicted to alcohol or drug.
The clinical study was undertaken in 52 people who were addicted to alcoholism.
4. Social surroundings and
5. Duration of addiction
All the people were males between 28-45 years of old. Only 5% of people were receiving remedies according to their will, and rest of them were administered remedies without their knowledge, i.e., through other members of family, who had instilled the medicines either in to their food or drink.
1. Patients were first treated with neutralizing drugs or detoxifying drugs.
2. Then with constitutional drugs which help the persons to build up a resistance against craving.
3. And then with functional remedies to combat any withdrawal symptoms that may arise after withdrawing alcohol.
The frequently used drugs were Nux Vom, Quercus Glandis Spiritus, and Acid Sulph. These drugs were given initially for a period of one month in 30th potency. Two doses were given per day.
Secondly these patients received constitutional remedies for a period of another one month. The remedies used in the study were Sulph, Lachesis, and Lycopodium in the 1M potency.
These remedies were mainly meant to manage the withdrawal symptoms, that may arise from withdrawing alcohol. Remedies were Belladonna, Gelesemium, Agaricus, and Kali phos. These drugs need frequent repetition as the symptoms need rapid relief.
In the present study three remedies were principally used. They are Nux Vom, Quecus Glandis an Acid Sulph in 30th potency. Either of these remedies were given in 2 doses per day, constituting 5 drops per dose for a period of one month. In the second month they were given constitutional remedies like lachesis sulphur, or lycopodium as the case may be. They were given in 1M potency one dose once in three days.
Functional remedies were of little use in the present study as withdrawal symptoms are minimal in the study. In the third month again constitutional remedies were repeated in the same manner. There after cases were studied every month for a period of six months.
The following behavioral changes were studied craving for alcohol, irritability, insomnia, violence and suicidal tendencies.
Results and Discussions
"The wine rejoices the heart of man, the wine taken moderately, is the joy of the soul and of the body" says Bible. Drinking wine is neither unsocial nor it is bad for health. This is true only if one take this occasionally. The present study is not aimed at people who consumes liquor occasionally, but people who are addicted to it.
There were 34 principal kinds of alcoholic beverages upon their six hundreds millions of consumers and there were about 14 homoeopathic remedies to De-addict it. In the present study it is seen that social surroundings played an important role in making one to develop the habit of alcoholism, and it constitutes about 61%. Heredity stood second it constitutes about 23% and due to others it was 16%. Among the total number studied 80% of people were addicted since 10 years.
As the study was conducted in poor people, their drinking had become a major financial problem of the family. In the majority of cases people were involving very hard labours, showing much irritability, maliciousness, violence, and some times suicidal tendencies with a strong desire for alcohol. These all point the great Homoeopathic remedy Nux Vom, so in 80 % of cases Nux was the remedy.
In the rest people strong desire was the main symptom, so either Acid Sulph or Quercus Glandis Spiritus was given. In all cases craving went off after one month treatment. This was followed by some constitutional correction by leading remedies like sulphur, Lachesis or Lycopodium considering their physical, mental and emotional symptoms.

Homoeopathy is a system based on the law of Similar which sees the man as a whole. As the medicines administered can effect the physical, mental and emotional planes, it can modify the craving or aversions for any things in any person.
It showed equal results in people consumed medicine with their knowledge as well as without.
In the present study, Homoeopathic remedies had once again proved their efficacy in managing the ailments of suffering humanity. out of 52 people studied 73% of people were deaddicted by three months and they had not taken alcohol, as they were followed up to six months. And in 17% of people craving for alcohol had diminished, and they felt both mentally and physically better and even if they consumed occasionally, they are spared from being addicted to it again.
We need to constantly improve and exchange our knowledge to provide the best possible treatment for our patients. It is not so much my intention here to prove or convince, but to provoke some deeper thoughts and reasoning and respect towards a method of treatment which has survived 200 years and is growing stronger than ever.
